EV charger monitoring

Know exactly what your car costs to charge.

Whatever charger you have, iVamp shows you what it's really using. Add a small Shelly energy meter to your charger's circuit and watch charging power live, see the kWh and the cost every day at your own tariff, and get tips on charging when electricity is cheapest or the sun is shining.

What you get

Your charger, measured.

See when the car is charging

Live charging power on gauges and dashboards, with your car shown in the home's power flow as "EV charge" or "EV idle".

Know what charging costs

Daily kWh for the charger in History, priced at your own tariff - not an estimate.

Charge for less

Savings tips that point the car, and other flexible loads, at your tariff's cheapest window or your expected solar output.

Alerts when something's off

A notification or email if charging stops overnight, or runs higher than it should.

Reports you can share

Timed captures exported as CSV or PDF with iVamp Pro - handy for business mileage, a landlord or a fleet claim.

Any make

Works with the charger you already have.

iVamp measures the electricity going to the charger - it doesn't need to talk to the charger itself. So the make and model don't matter:

  • No new charger, and no account with the charger maker
  • Your data stays on your own network
  • The same meter can monitor your whole house at the same time

The hardware

One small meter in the consumer unit.

Most UK home chargers are single-phase (7.4 kW, 32 A), so a two-channel Shelly EM covers the charger and the whole house in one unit. The meter's clamp goes round the charger's supply cable. It must be fitted by a qualified electrician - we fit them around the New Forest.

Three-phase charger (11–22 kW)Shelly Pro 3EM on the charger's supplyAll three phases of the charger, tagged EV—

Before fitting, we check

  • The clamp's current rating covers the charger's circuit - for example a 50 A clamp for a 32 A charger
  • The meter can join the same Wi-Fi or wired network as your phone or computer
  • If your charger has its own clamp for solar diversion (zappi, Hypervolt), it stays as it is - the Shelly clamp is separate

What it doesn't do

iVamp shows and reports what the charger uses. It doesn't start, stop or schedule charging, show the car's battery percentage, or pull per-session reports from the charger - control stays in your charger's own app.

Setting it up

About five minutes, once the meter's in.

Add the meter

In iVamp: Devices › Find new device, scan the network, or add it by its I.P. address.

Tag it as EV

Open the power-flow tile's settings, tap the charger's channel and choose EV. The house supply stays as Grid.

Add a gauge

Put the charger's channel on your dashboard, so charging power is visible at a glance.

Check History

Pick the charger channel to see its daily kWh and cost at your tariff.

Set an alert

Optional: for example, tell me if charging stops during an overnight charge.

Questions

FAQ

Does it work with my charger?

Yes. iVamp measures the electricity going to the charger, so the make and model don't matter.

Can iVamp start or stop charging?

No. It shows and reports what the charger uses; control stays in the charger's own app.

Will it interfere with my charger's solar diversion?

No. The Shelly clamp is separate from any clamp your charger uses.

Can I fit the meter myself?

It sits in or near the consumer unit and needs mains power, so have a qualified electrician fit it.

Do I need iVamp Pro?

Not to start with. The free version includes one real device, so a single Shelly EM monitoring the charger and the house works free, with the last 7 days of history. Pro adds unlimited devices, full history and CSV export.

Does my data go to the cloud?

No. iVamp reads the meter on your own network. Data only leaves it if you choose to share readings with your installer.

Will it show my car's battery level?

No. That needs a direct link to the car or charger, which this setup doesn't have.

Want one fitted?

We fit Shelly energy meters and set them up with iVamp around the New Forest - often on the same visit as a new charger.

About iVamp

For installers

Fitting chargers? Offer monitoring on the same visit.

A Shelly EM adds about an hour to a charger install, works with every make, and gives your customer something to open every day. With iVamp Trade you can keep an eye on their system too, with their permission. Copy and adapt the wording below.

Subject: See what your car costs to charge, live

Hi [Customer name],

Now that your [charger make] is in, would you like to see exactly what it costs to run?

For [£price] fitted, I can add a small Shelly energy meter to your consumer unit. With the free iVamp app you'll then see:

- your car's charging power live, on your phone or PC
- how many kWh it uses each day, and the cost at your own tariff
- the cheapest times to charge, from your tariff and solar forecast
- an alert if charging stops overnight

The meter's second channel monitors your whole house as well, so you'll see your total usage and costs in the same app. It works with any charger and doesn't change how your charger works.

If you'd also like me to keep an eye on things remotely, I can link it to my iVamp for Trade portfolio, and I'll be alerted if anything faults.

Reply to this email or call [phone] to book it in - it takes about an hour.
